Common use
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. It works by blocking the enzyme in the stomach wall that produces acid, leading to reduced acidity and relief from heartburn and related symptoms. It also promotes healing of acid-related damage in the esophagus and stomach. Often used in combination with antibiotics to treat H. pylori infections.
Dosage and direction
The typical adult dose is 20–40 mg once daily, taken before a meal, usually in the morning. The capsule or tablet should be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed or chewed. Duration of treatment may vary from a few days to several weeks depending on the condition. Follow your doctor’s instructions strictly for best results.
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, low magnesium levels, or osteoporosis. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, and gastrointestinal infections. Omeprazole may mask symptoms of serious stomach conditions such as cancer. Do not use for more than 14 days unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Contraindications
Do not use omeprazole if you are allergic to it or other proton pump inhibitors. It should not be taken with certain medications such as rilpivirine. Caution is advised in patients with severe liver impairment. Avoid use during pregnancy unless clearly needed and approved by a physician.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and flatulence. Less frequent side effects may include dizziness, rash, or dry mouth. Rare but serious effects include kidney issues, Clostridium difficile infection, and low magnesium levels. Seek immediate help if experiencing seizures, irregular heartbeat, or severe allergic reaction.
Drug interaction
Omeprazole can interact with drugs like clopidogrel, warfarin, diazepam, and certain antifungals. It may reduce the absorption of drugs that require stomach acid for absorption, such as ketoconazole and atazanavir. Always inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you're taking. Dose adjustments or alternatives may be necessary.
Missed dose
If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your usual schedule. Do not take two doses at once. Consistent timing improves effectiveness.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, and nausea. Seek emergency medical help immediately. Treatment is mainly supportive as there is no specific antidote. Hospital observation may be required.
Storage
Store omeprazole at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F), away from moisture and heat. Keep in the original container and protect from light. Keep out of reach of children and dispose of expired medication properly.
