Common use
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production. It treats conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and stomach ulcers. It’s also used in combination with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. By lowering acid levels, it promotes healing of the esophagus and prevents acid-related damage.
Dosage and direction
The usual adult dose ranges from 20 mg to 40 mg once daily, typically taken at least one hour before meals. Tablets or capsules should be swallowed whole with water and not crushed or chewed. In some cases, delayed-release granules may be mixed with water and taken orally or via a feeding tube. Duration of treatment depends on the condition being treated and medical guidance.
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, osteoporosis, or low magnesium levels before starting esomeprazole. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, or Clostridium difficile infection. Esomeprazole may mask symptoms of serious conditions like stomach cancer. Regular monitoring is recommended during extended treatment periods.
Contraindications
Esomeprazole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, other PPIs, or any excipients. It should not be used concurrently with medications like nelfinavir due to potential drug interaction. Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment. It is not recommended for use in children under 1 year unless prescribed.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea. Less commonly, users may experience dizziness, dry mouth, or rash. Rare but serious effects include severe allergic reactions, kidney problems, and low magnesium levels. Seek immediate medical help if you experience chest pain, seizures, or signs of an allergic reaction.
Drug interaction
Esomeprazole may affect the absorption of drugs that depend on stomach acidity, such as ketoconazole or atazanavir. It may also interact with blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), clopidogrel, and certain antifungal or antiviral medications. Avoid using with St. John’s Wort or rifampin, as they may reduce esomeprazole effectiveness. Always inform your doctor about all drugs and supplements you’re taking.
Missed dose
If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s nearly time for your next dose. Skip the missed dose if necessary, but never double the dose. Continue your regular dosing schedule. Consistency helps maintain effective acid suppression.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, blurred vision, sweating, and a rapid heartbeat. In most cases, overdose is not life-threatening but may require medical attention. Supportive care is the main treatment. Contact emergency services if an overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store esomeprazole at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication in its original blister packaging or bottle. Do not use after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children.
